Author Julia Serano Will Be In Town!

Gretchen's picture

Julia Serano, author of Whipping Girl: A Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity, will be in town for a reading at A Room Of One's Own Bookstore on November 9th at 6pm. The Gender and Sexuality Bookclub and the Transgender Bookclub read her book, so I think there will be a pretty good crowd of folks familiar with this author's work, and she sounds pretty interesting. The event is free and open to the public! We hope to see some of you there for this event!

A Room of One's Own is located at 307 W Johnson St, right off State St next to Fontana Sports. If you have questions, please call the store at (608)257-7888 or stop on by!

I feel compelled to give

I feel compelled to give another plug for this event. Julia Serano is one of the most crucial public voices of trans activism today.

I’ve had some dark moments over the past year—-the sort of moments when you slash off all your hair with scissors, and then think about turning the scissors on your wrists. Serano’s writing and spoken word performances literally kept me alive during some really grim days.

If you have any interest in trans issues, feminism, or gender at all, you MUST attend this. If you think most transwomen are all make-up and high heels, instead of t-shirts and jeans, you MUST attend this. If you have ever been told that you weren’t male enough, or female enough, or transgendered enough, you MUST attend this.

Show up if you're an effeminate transman or a butch transwoman, you'll be in good company!
