“I commend President Obama and his Office of National AIDS Policy for producing the first-ever comprehensive federal strategy to combat the AIDS epidemic. I agree that we must reduce the number of people that become infected, increase access to care, and address the profound disparities in the impact of this disease. But I have lost too many friends, and watched this disease ravage too many communities, to think that we can reach these goals with hope alone. We need significant investment of federal resources – beyond short-term patches – that will finally bring an end to the unbearable toll of HIV/AIDS in our country.”
