There's so many avenues that
There's so many avenues that this question begs to be taken to... I don't think an answer to this question is even remotely fathomable. Because there are so many people that are open or willingly share their identity, we know that much. There are many more that remain hidden and we have so much to learn about those who have yet to understand and/or accept and/or acknowledge whatever identity they feel to be appropriate for them.
This is my midnight response so I might be off.. but this is a forum.. let's hear it! :)

All good points, but myself just wondering knowing men in all aspects of out and coming out or well hidden.

That's an octopus with a thousand tentacles....that would be very hard to pin down, because so many people are involved....
Though if you're just talking about Madison, I do think it would be very interesting if some people got together and compiled a history of gay Madison. Milwaukee has a similar project that I've seen during Pridefest.
I know Outreach may have some historical information about Madison. I believe one of their directors was part of an earlier newsletter/newspaper for the LGBT community in Madison.
